Firstly whatever company you choose make sure they are Licensed as a taxi or private hire operator with their Local Authority. Any vehicles you hire should be displaying a current and numbered plate or badge and the driver of the vehicle will also have a valid photo ID badge both issued and showing the local authority they work in.

TYPES OF CABS
Hackney Carriages are taxis/cabs you can flag down in the street or pick up from a taxi rank. The driver in most authorities sits a local knowledge test, so in theory he or she should know their way around the area. They display a Taxi sign and local authority taxi plate on the vehicle and are fitted with a fare meter, which should only be engaged at the start of the hire. A fare chart issued by the local authority should also be on show.

Private Hire sometimes also known as minicabs are vehicles again who should be licensed by a local authority and display its numbered plate. The driver will have a valid photo ID badge and a fare chart showing upto date prices, but the car may not always have a meter fitted. In this case a fare for a journey should be agreed before hire starts. These cannot be hailed in the street and must be pre-booked with the operating company beforehand.

SAFETY TIP

Always check any Taxi you hire has a valid numbered plate displayed, make a note of the number before you get in. Ask the driver how long your journey will take ? If you know the area and his answer sounds okay even better. Then send a simple text message something like this to home or a friend " im in a taxi number 1235 will arrive home in 10 mins" obviously the message should contain your correct details!!  Takes just a few moments !
